Tip Calculator — Tipping Guide for Every Situation
Tipping is a deeply rooted cultural practice in many countries. A tip calculator takes the awkwardness out of deciding how much to leave — no mental math required. Just enter the bill, choose a tip percentage, split by the number of people, and you are done.
Standard Tipping Guidelines
- Restaurants (sit-down): 15–20% for average service, 20–25% for excellent service. In India, 10% is commonly appreciated.
- Fast food / Cafes: Not expected, but 5–10% is a nice gesture.
- Delivery (food): ₹20–₹50 or $2–$5 per delivery, or 10–15%.
- Taxi / Cab: 10–15%, or round up to the nearest convenient amount.
- Hotel staff: ₹50–₹100 or $1–$5 per bag for bellhops; $2–$5 per night for housekeeping.
- Salon / Spa: 15–20% of the service cost.
- Tour guide: $5–$10 per person for a half-day tour.
How to Split a Bill
Splitting the bill evenly is the fairest approach for most group meals. Our calculator divides the total bill including tip by the number of diners. If people ordered very differently, individual billing is more accurate, but for most casual meals, even splitting is the norm.
Tipping Etiquette by Country
- USA: Tipping is expected (15–20%). Service staff often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips.
- UK: 10–15% at restaurants; not expected everywhere.
- India: Not strictly required but widely appreciated. 10% at restaurants.
- Japan: Tipping is considered rude and can be refused. Service is included in the price.
- Australia: Not mandatory but appreciated. 10% at sit-down restaurants.
